Four Ways to Reduce Your Chances of Getting Lung Cancer
Below are 4 things you can start (or stop!) doing today that’ll lower your chances of developing lung cancer:
- Don’t Smoke! A quitter’s risk of developing lung cancer decreases every day.
- Avoid Secondhand Smoke. About 3,000 people die each year from lung cancer caused by secondhand smoke. If someone around you smokes (even if it’s a spouse), first try to help them stop (especially if it’s a spouse!). Until then, ask them is they’d mind doing it outside. If they can’t bring themselves to that level of thoughtfulness, go get a little fresh air yourself.
- Eat 5-9 servings of fruits or vegetables each day. If you don’t yet, learn to love broccoli - your body sure does.
- Keep your home free of radon. Buy a detector at the hardware store to check for this gas. It is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is responsible for about 21,000 deaths every year.
Did you know that nearly twice as many women die from lung cancer each year as from breast cancer?

Slowing Down the Pace
Yesterday really made me think. Normally a good thing. The thoughts began with a post I read early in the morning, then they continued off and on until late at night as I baked brownies with my oldest daughter.
Like most people these days, I stay busy - and the times during the day when I’m not busy, the mind usually spends that time (all 10 minutes of it!) thinking about what to do next. I think we’re all pretty guilty of getting caught up in a mad crazy cycle. We set this ridiculous pace for ourselves and watch as our health, and often even relationships, go flying out the window. Then we have the audacity to wonder where they went. We chased them off!
The best moments in life are the ones that happen when we aren’t trying to catch up to our expectations. Planting bulbs with an audience of cats, watching a movie with your family, drinking coffee in the morning waiting for your loved ones to come staggering through, singing out loud with the radio, summer’s first ice cream cone, reading Dean Koontz then sleeping with one eye open, baking brownies with a daughter who “folds” flour in with a mixer on high…… The list goes on, or rather it’ll go on as far as we allow it to. If we don’t get too busy with business.
We work hard so we can give our family everything they need, but ultimately they need us more than anything else. And they need for us to be healthy - mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally. Nothing we could ever give them could take the place of that. If only we could realize that while there’s still plenty of time to un-do something about it.

Wanna Tangle?
If someone came up with a toy that sparked creativity and subdued tension, would you check it out?
Me too.
Tangle toys are adddictively twistable toys that spark creativity as they relax your body. You turn, morph and manipulate their shapes into different configurations. Somehow the whole process is a joy ride for your spirit. It frees up tension in your neck and hands, brings about relaxation, and as an extra kick - your creativity is stimulated.
The design was inspired by the Tibetan Infinite Knot, and ancient Buddhist ornament that signifies wisdom and is sail to have calming powers.
While on their site, check out the Brain Stem Study.
Play Dough went to college.

Saturday’s Quote of the Day
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~Mark Twain
…”Sail awaf from the safe harbor….Catch the trade wind in your sails….Explore…Dream….Discover.” Great stuff! Mark Twain took words and made magic. Sheer magic.

Is This the One?
Below’s a link to a pretty insightful article. Insightful because if you’re currently dating someone, this article can help you (to a certain extent) determine if this one could go the distance.
If you’re already going the distance with a lucky someone, this can take your relationship’s temperature. If things are a might chilly - light a fire and warm them up!

Friday’s Quote(s) of the Day
The way I see it, Friday is a day for fun quotes. No depth, no logic….just silliness and smiles.
Mr. Yogi Berra stepping up to the Plate:
“You wouldn’t have won if we’d beaten you.”
“Half the lies they tell about me aren’t true.”
“If people don’t want to come out to the ball park, nobody’s going to stop them.”
“Baseball is ninety percent mental. The other half if physical.”
“You have to give 100 percent in the first half of the game. If that isn’t enough, in the second half, you have to give what is left.”
“You can’t think and hit the ball at the same time.“
“Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.“
“The game isn’t over until it’s over.”
“Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.“
“I made a wrong mistake.”
Yogi ordered a pizza. The waitress asked How many pieces do you want your pie cut? Yogi responded, “Four. I don’t think I could eat eight.”
“If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”
“A nickel isn’t worth a dime today.”
When asked what would he do if he found $1 million, Yogi responded, “If the guy was poor, I’d give it back.”
“You can observe a lot by just watching.”
“Anyone who is popular is bound to be disliked.”
“In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.”
“That’s his style of hitting . If you can’t imitate him, don’t copy him.”
Referring to the bad sun conditions in left field at the stadium: “It gets late out there early.”
“This is like deja vu all over again.”
“I didn’t say the things I said.”
You gotta love Yogi Berra! We’ll never know just how many billions of smiles he launches a year. Maybe even millions.
Have a fun weekend…one that’s makes you smile even if it doesn’t make sense.

More on Gum Disease
While researching gum disease, I learned a few things - bully for my inner scholar, hadn’t seen her in a while.
Did you know that tobacco use greatly increases one’s risk of gum disease. Another reason for those who are trying to quit to keep after it!
Stress also puts an individual in the higher risk zone for gum disease. Stress makes it harder for the body to fight off infection, including periodontal disease.
A few other factors that put one’s gums at risk are:
- Diabetes
- Down’s Syndrome
- Oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, and certain heart medicines
- Poor diet
- Not getting enough sleep
A warning to our smoking friends, I’d never read this before and thought I’d pass it along - if you dental surgery is looming before you, you need to kick butt(s) beforehand. Here’s the link to the study’s findings: Smoking Impairs Outcome of Periodontal Procedures
Not to harp (she says as she begins to harp), but if you have to quit for a dental procedure, just go on and quit for good!
